I know of only three ways to go bald. First, you can go kicking and screaming: agitated, medicated and, in some cases, after having some hair transplanted. Or, you can let nature take its course, always losing ground, but graceful in your surrender. But finally, you can go boldly - and grandly - taking matters into your own hands, not leaving the coup de grace to be delivered on nature's schedule, precipitating the event on your own terms, and in style. Because, in the end, going bald boldly is a matter of style. Think about the famously bald men you know - men like Yul Brenner and Michael Jordan. Did either of these men come into their eventual pate of affairs gradually? No. Instead, so suddenly did they transition from thinning hair to immaculate extraction, that a Herculean effort of imagination is now required to recall them in their previous state. These men made hairlessness a statement, even a mantra; something that separated them and made them more special and majestic then their counterparts sporting hair. But how does one know if he can carry off the ultimate tonsorial statement? The shape of the head is a factor, of course. Well-shaped heads without irregular bump outs will look better than heads with peaks and valleys. But you shouldn't lose hope completely if you're not blessed with that sort of regularity. Less than perfect heads have been known to account for the same sort of panache as more regular ones. One thing is for sure, nearly any bald head will compare favorably to one combed over and with thinning follicles. Is there truly ever any derision directed at a fully cleared top? To the contrary, baldness is usually associated with edginess, virility, sexiness, forcefulness, and confidence. So, there are definitely starting advantages with going bald. But before you decide to make a clean break with your hair, you should know that baldness has been associated with an elevated risk of skin cancer due to the greater exposure. That only means, however, you should be smart about protecting your shaved head on extra sunny days, and use lotions with a high SPF factor as needed. _______________________________________ By Martin Remy
