Drip…drip…drip…just may be the sound and rate of your health and wellness wasting, simply because you do not consume enough water. Fortunately, this is an absolutely reversible circumstance. And there is never a time like NOW to begin to change it. What’s your reason for not drinking enough water anyway? Inconvenience? Bad habits? Certainly it’s not lack of availability. And it’s unlikely that you’re one of the very few people who intensely dislike water; more likely, you simply prefer some other taste. But there are several good reasons to renew efforts to drink more water. You may have heard them before, but they bear repeating. Water is essential to the smooth operation of crucial biological processes. And why wouldn’t it be? After all, your brain, , and lungs are made up of 95, 90, and 80 percent water, respectively. Metabolism performed by your liver and especially your kidneys also require lots of water. If your body is water-starved then these organs must work much harder to do their task. And you’re wrong if you think no one notices. One of your liver’s primary functions is to metabolize fat. When you kidneys are inefficient due to dehydration, your liver comes to the rescue, meaning fewer resources to metabolize all that unglamorous fat. Does it show? Water plays a role in your appearance in other ways. Beyond generally looking and feeling healthier when you’re well hydrated, water can really jumpstart your looks! For starters, it flushes out impurities in your skin, leaving you with a clear complexion and giving you a more youthful appearance. On the other hand, a dehydrated look makes only an alligator mom proud. How much water should you drink? “Eight glasses of water a day?!” you say. Actually, some studies have found that eight is not enough. But lets not throw the baby out in too many glasses of water. The important thing is to begin to drink more water. Baby steps, if you will. First off, if you can afford to join the water club at work, do it! If you don’t have a water club, consider starting one. Believe me, there’s something about paying for water that other people are guzzling that pushes you to drink more. I’ve been there. Also, try sipping water throughout the day wherever you are. Water bottles are helpful if you’re on the road a lot. Flavor you water with a slice or squeeze of lemon. But whatever you do, DRINK WATER! It’s the only rational choice. __________________________ By John Gavin
